History magazine impresses national competition judges

Contributors to Issue 9 of SGS Historian with their prizes

Over the summer holiday we received the news that Issue 9 of the SGS Historian magazine was chosen as runner up in Young Historian Awards Best School History Magazine competition (sponsored by the Mid-Trent and Mercia Branch).

The theme for this year’s publication was ‘Forgotten History’ and the writing team was Eddie Griffiths, Tom Farrelly, Frances Walmsley, Penny Horsford, Kiera Field and James Hood. Head of Sixth Form Mr David Stone and Classics Teacher Mr Alistair Thorley also penned contributions.

The judging panel were highly impressed by the standard of all entries from across the country: “what strikes the judges is the range of interests explored by young people across the age range, demonstrating their capacity to ‘enquire’ about historical topics way beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum and examination expectations.”

In reference to the SGS Historian, the judging panel specifically mentioned how much they “really enjoyed it and the way the students wrote”. The judges were “very impressed by the range and depths of the articles included and particularly the discursive and analytical nature of the various items”.

This year’s team will be recording some of their pieces for the first of this year’s SGS History Podcasts, which will be available to listen to soon!

Each of the pupils has chosen a book as a prize, which has been presented to them in a Senior assembly. The range of choices, from Dan Richard’s ‘Outpost’ to Crane Brinton’s ‘Anatomy of a Revolution’ reflects the diversity of interests and the curiosity of this year’s writing team.
