Theatre trip to capital delights Drama pupils

Pupils outside the Warner Brothers Studio during their trip to London

50 pupils from Third Year to Sixth Form participated in a London theatre extravaganza, organised and led by Drama teacher Miss Lucy Mitchell.

The first stop was Watford and pupils jumped into the magical world of ‘Harry Potter’ with a tour of the Warner Brothers Studio. It was then on to the capital city where pupils experienced the sights and sounds of London, taking a walk along the South Bank of the Thames.

Pupils were then ‘transported’ to Manhattan to watch the critically-acclaimed immersive theatre experience that is ‘Guys and Dolls’. They had the opportunity to move around where the action was taking place to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Some bought pretzels and Trilby hats and one pupil even had her shoes shined, before all were invited to take part in a dance party after the performance with members of the cast!

A Third Year pupil said: “Best night of my life, it was amazing! My legs will be dead in the morning but I don’t care because that was amazing!”

Pupils then walked back to their hotel along the Thames, stopping to take some awe-inspiring photos from Tower Bridge. Third Year pupil Sienna Ward said: “It was such a beautiful walk home from the theatre. It was so atmospheric. I’ll never forget it.”

Day two saw pupils enjoying some time in Covent Garden and a river cruise along the Thames before taking a ride on the London Eye. It was then back to the West End to watch the latest Olivier award-winning musical, ‘Standing at the Sky’s Edge’.

Hailed as ‘the greatest new British musicals’ (Daily Express), ‘Standing at the Sky’s Edge’ is a kaleidoscopic portrait of life on an ever-changing Sheffield estate, charting the highs and lows and loves and losses of three generations over six tumultuous decades.

A Fourth Year pupil said: “My legs feel like they no longer exist from the walking, but it was worth convincing my parents to let me go. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done!”

A Lower Sixth pupil concluded: “It’s the best trip I’ve have ever been on!”
