Year 1 have a hoot thanks to visit from feathered friends

As part of their ‘Animals’ topic, Year 1 had a very exciting visit from Cheshire Falconry, which was kindly funded by the Stopfordian Parents’ Association.

The children met a barn owl called Sam, Nova the spectacled owl, Walter the Eurasian eagle owl and Pod the little owl.

They learned about the differences and similarities between them, what they eat, where they live and how they hunt for food.

The four owls flew all around the school hall and the children stayed very calm and still as the owls swooped down over their heads.

The children were amazed to learn that owls can hear a mouse’s heartbeat from under 30cm of snow!

Florence S said: “I liked learning that owls with yellow or orange eyes come out in the daytime and owls with dark eyes come out at night.”

Maya R added “I didn’t know that owls could fly so quickly and so quietly at the same time.”

At the end of the session, the children had the opportunity to stroke Walter, the Eurasian eagle owl. They were very gentle and careful with his beautiful, soft feathers.
