Meet the Art Staff


Our talented Art team look forward to welcoming you to Stockport Grammar School.

Mr Richard Davies (Head of Department)

Head of Art, Mr Davies has degrees from Lancashire Polytechnic, University of York and Manchester Metropolitan University. He studied his PGCE at Liverpool, John Moores University. Before coming to Stockport Grammar School, Mr Davies worked as a media researcher and helped to develop advertising strategies for Nike, Adidas and the BBC to name a few. He came to SGS in 2006 and also undertakes his role as Lead Assessment Writer for AQA and Senior Moderator for A Level Art and Design. While he said it is impossible to choose his favourite artist or style of art, he said he does lean towards Picasso, Kiefer, Twombly and British Modernism of the 1930s.

Dr Thekla Kampelmann

Dr Kampelmann gained her MA and teaching qualification at Dortmund University for Art, English, German as a Foreign Language and Education followed by a PhD with the University of Bristol and the University of Dortmund. Before starting at SGS in 2002 she taught and studied at the University of Derby (UK), Braga (Portugal) and Orissa (India), and helped to develop the Academic European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). She combines her teaching with her work as a freelance artist and illustrator with exhibitions in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Sweden. Her work includes paintings for businesses in Germany, an ancient monastery on the Turkish Syrian border and illustrations for the well- known book The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. Inspiration for her art work comes from a variety of artists past and present and travelling widely, meeting people of different cultural backgrounds.

Mrs Rebecca Upton

Mrs Upton studied at Manchester School of Art completing a BA (Hons) in 3D Design, followed by a PGCE on Secondary Education Art and Design. She joined SGS in 2003 and has since continued her studies at Manchester Metropolitan completing a master in Education as a Teacher Maker with distinction. Her passion to teach and continue making her own artwork, informs and supports her practice in the classroom and beyond. Mrs Upton is also a keen gardener, interior designer and upcycler.
