Good Schools Guide
We are thrilled that the Good Schools Guide has assessed that Stockport Grammar School is “worth its weight in educational gold” in its most recent report.
The leading school review site has evaluated over 1,400 schools across the country – both in the independent and state sectors. Their review takes into account all aspects of school life from the curriculum, sports and drama, and even our school lunches which were described as ‘fantastic’.

The review was undertaken in the 2024 Autumn Term and was published just before Christmas.
The guide was complimentary about the co-curricular activities, including all the sport and music opportunities we have to offer. It was noted how enthusiastic our pupils are towards their co-curricular activities, with the report detailing that: “The extracurricular opportunities lead pupils to say they all feel that they can participate.”
A further excerpt from the report describes the school as “a down-to-earth place with high aspirations for its pupils, a great extracurricular offer, a genuine family atmosphere and a very committed caring staff from the head down.”

The review came in tandem with news that Stockport Grammar has been named as one of the Top 10 Independent Schools in the North West by the Sunday Times.
SGS has been ranked ninth in the area and the ranking takes into account a school’s A Level and GCSE results, which are used to generate a final ‘score’ for schools across the country.

It comes as no surprise that SGS has scored highly, following an amazing collection of results over the summer. At A Level more than 48% of grades were at A* and A, and 90% at A* to C. At GCSE 23% of grades were at the highest grade of 9, and over 63% were at 9, 8 and 7. At the time, Head Mrs Sarah Capewell commented that: “Our A Level and GCSE results were superb and exceeded the results from 2023.”

Speaking about both results, the Head commented: “Receiving such positive judgements from two such high-profile sources in the same week has been a thrilling way to end the term. Our place in the Sunday Times Top 10 Independent Schools in the North West is a welcome recognition of the hard work of our pupils and staff to achieve such impressive exam results. However, the value of SGS is based on more than exam results and the review in the Good Schools Guide has encapsulated that beautifully.”
