Head’s Welcome

Head Sarah Capewell talking with pupils

Stockport Grammar Senior School is more than a place of learning – it’s a genuine community where every pupil feels welcomed, valued, and inspired. Children join us at age 11 from a wide range of local maintained and independent schools, and through our extensive bursary programme, we ensure that talent meets opportunity.

Founded in 1487, SGS is proud of its heritage and traditions – and we are equally committed to the future. As a co-educational, independent day school, we offer a modern, forward-thinking approach to education – preparing pupils not just for exams, but for life. Our aim is simple: to help every child leave SGS confident, capable, and ready for whatever comes next.

We believe education should go beyond academic achievement – prioritising wellbeing alongside exam performance. Our goal is to empower pupils to build resilience, curiosity, and balance for a future that demands more than grades.

Pupils achieve outstanding results through small class sizes, expert teaching, and personalised pastoral care. But learning at SGS doesn’t stop there. A wealth of co-curricular opportunities – from music and drama to sport and outdoor pursuits – helps pupils discover passions, develop talents, and perform at the highest level.

We would love for you to experience SGS for yourself. Throughout the year, we host open days, taster sessions, and school day visits – giving you the chance to see our vibrant, supportive community in action. If you can’t visit in person, our website will help you explore what makes us such a unique school.

If you have any questions about school life, please get in touch. We’re always happy to help.
