Academic Ambition

Two pupils with a globe

Stockport Grammar School instils real academic ambition, allowing pupils to make excellent progress and achieve the highest possible public examination grades.

Enthusiastic teachers, varied activities and excellent facilities engage pupils’ curiosity and inspire them to work hard.

The progress of each pupil is carefully monitored and the teachers offer advice, support and extra help as necessary with a dedicated Learning Support Department also available. Regular grades, reports and consultation evenings keep parents in touch.

The curriculum offers a fantastic range of subjects with pupil choice always at the centre of decision making. Homework allows pupils to grow in confidence and explore their learning in a different way and all tasks are available on-line for parents to see.

SGS has an enormous range of academic activities to extend learning beyond the classroom and the school has a strong track record in national competitions. Pupils are ambitious and motivated and enjoy a culture in which high achievement is normal.

Academic Support and Extension

Senior School and Sixth Form pupils can take advantage of an extensive programme of Academic Support and Extension activities designed to deepen understanding, strengthen subject knowledge and inspire intellectual curiosity.

Whether pupils are looking for additional help with GCSE and A Level studies or seeking opportunities to explore a subject beyond the curriculum, there is something for everyone. Sessions include dedicated support clinics in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Geography, Religious Studies and Modern Foreign Languages, alongside subject-specific workshops, revision sessions and catch-up opportunities that help pupils build confidence and achieve their academic potential. Staff are also available to provide individual support, ensuring pupils receive the guidance they need to thrive.

For pupils eager to challenge themselves further, a wide range of enrichment and extension opportunities are available. Aspiring scientists can join Medical Society, BioSoc, STEM Club, Chemistry Olympiad Preparation, and Physics Extension sessions, while future linguists can develop their skills through French, German and Spanish extension classes. There are also opportunities to engage in thought-provoking discussion through Philosophy Club, Geography Society and Classics Extension, as well as university and admissions test preparation sessions for Sixth Form pupils considering competitive courses. From academic competitions and research projects to subject societies and specialist workshops, these activities encourage pupils to explore their interests in greater depth and cultivate a lifelong love of learning.

Teaching and Learning

Pupils in a Computer Science lesson

Our dedicated teachers create highly effective learning environments to increase our pupils’ learning potential. We work together to build a culture of collaboration and excellence, sharing ideas and best practices so our teaching methods best suit our pupils at SGS.

Today, there is a lot of research in education, psychology, and cognitive science that helps us understand how learning works best. This information is gathered and shared with SGS teachers by our Teaching and Learning Committee through regular bulletins. SGS teachers are also encouraged to use our professional development library and journal subscriptions to keep improving their teaching methods.

Another key part of our teaching today is our approach to digital learning. Firstly, whiteboards, laptops, and tablets enable a level of interactivity and analysis that was unimaginable for previous generations. We make good use of these tools while still maintaining the personal connection we believe is essential. Secondly, we understand that the world our pupils will enter is becoming more shaped and reliant on technology. It’s important that we give them the skills and confidence to succeed in the digital world, and the ability to challenge and influence it with the values they’ve learned.

We are confident that with our educational approach – rooted in tradition, informed by science, and geared for technology- your child will have the best opportunity to develop a love of learning, become the best version of themselves, and be ready to face the challenges of our rapidly changing world.

This is a quick overview of our teaching approach. If you have any questions or would like to discuss further, please contact Mr Ian Kendrick, Deputy Head (Academic).
