Manchester the perfect environment for creative Sixth Formers

Pupils working in Castlefield during their Art and Textiles trip to Manchester

Lower Sixth Art and Textiles pupils gathered fantastic imagery and ideas on the theme of environment during their annual trip into Manchester.

The richness the city centre has in terms of different spaces and places offered plenty of opportunities for the pupils to photograph, sketch and gather materials to then develop and explore back in the classroom.

A lot of ground was covered on the day, starting in Castlefield – both under and on the viaduct. The gritty industrial space has huge imposing steel structures, a modern suspension bridge and reflective qualities on the canals, giving the pupils a lot to work with.

Next up was the newer part of town of Spinningfields, via the Saul Hey Gallery and the Smolensky Gallery. Lots of photographs and ‘en plein air’ studies were produced.

The final leg involved visiting Manchester Art Gallery and exploring Chinatown – two very contrasting spaces in terms or light, colours and atmosphere.

The pupils worked their socks off and are developing their own more personal and individual lines of enquiry for their personal investigation.
