Musicians shine on stage at the Summer Concert
The audience flocked to the Dining Hall to experience an evening of musical delights at the Summer Concert.
After a brief welcome from Director of Music, Mr Dow, the concert kicked off with a bang. Conducted by peripatetic music teacher Mr Landon, Senior Percussion expertly performed ‘Low Life’ (Bedford) and ‘Quadratics’ which was composed by Mr Landon himself. During their second piece, the quartet circled a drum kit all whilst never missing a beat, certainly an impressive feat!
Second Orchestra took a more classical approach with their performances of ‘Sword Life’ (arr. Phillips), ‘Take Five’ (arr. Cerulli) and ‘Trepak’ from Tchaikovsky’s ballet ‘The Nutcracker’.
Keeping with the classical theme, Mrs Matthews then conducted String Orchestra through Purcell’s ‘Rondeau from Abdelazer’ before bringing the Latin vibes with a ‘Trio of Latin Pieces by Martin.
The audience was treated to ‘Beguine’, ‘Serenata’ and ‘Huapango’ which brought the sunshine to the hall.
Before the interval Big Band played three energetic pieces. The first was ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’ from the musical ‘Hairspray’, the second was a rendition of the 1982 hit ‘Africa’ by the band Toto. Thirdly the band brought some fun with their performance of the theme from Disney Pixar film ‘The Incredibles’.
After a series of wonderful performances, the audience enjoyed refreshments in Edmond’s Café before Concert Band began the second half of the concert.
Their set began with Sparke’s ‘Processional Overture’ which was followed by Ford’s ‘Dune Buggy’. Their third piece was an audience favourite and got hands clapping as they performed the theme from ‘Wallace and Gromit’.
Then the audience were treated Vivaldi’s ‘Magnificat’ which was performed by our Chorus.
Several pupils performed excellent solos during the piece including Amelie Manson, Rosie Moore and Sean Sembatya. Sisters Abigail and Charlotte Sullivan also performed together during the sixth movement of the song. At the end of the performance Head Mrs Capewell commented on the quality of the piece, stating that she thought the performers sounded like professional singers.
Preparations are now underway for our Lower School Concert on 5th June and the Music Festival on 20th June.
