Pupils enjoy jam-packed itinerary on Madrid trip

Spanish pupils in Third Year, Fourth Year and Lower Sixth enjoyed working on their linguistic skills and broadening their cultural knowledge on the biennial trip to Madrid.

After a midday flight to Spain’s capital, the group enjoyed a relaxed evening bowling and settling into their surroundings.

The following day the trip activities started in earnest. In the morning, the students headed to Real Madrid’s Bernabéu stadium and museum, and lunch was cooked by the pupils themselves at the Apetit’Oh cookery school. The pupils collectively made tortilla española, paella mixta and tarta de Santiago for their lunch which were all very tasty.

The afternoon was then spent at Retiro Park, Madrid’s largest green space, where many of the pupils took the opportunity to spend 45 minutes rowing on the boating lake. After dinner at the hostel, the group made their way to a professional ‘tablao flamenco’ where the dancers and musicians showed incredible skill and commitment to their art.

Over the weekend, they continued to immerse themselves in Spanish culture by visiting Spain’s most important bull ring, Las Ventas. The afternoon was spent at the local Warner Brothers theme park and, despite the excessive heat, lots of fun was had by all.

Sunday was a day to test their language skills as the pupils visited the famous ‘El Rastro’ flea market, which runs every Sunday in the heart of the city and has over 700 stalls. The pupils put their haggling skills to the test and practised their transactional Spanish with great success!

Reflecting on the trip, Head of Spanish Mrs Katherine Psaila said: “It was a jam-packed itinerary with lots of opportunities for the pupils to learn about Spanish culture. They were all fully engaged in the activities and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A special thank you goes to Mrs Cole and Mr McClafferty for accompanying the trip, which wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
