Sixth Form chemists explore real-world science

Lower Sixth chemistry pupils have been developing their knowledge of, and skills for, the subject by taking part in a number of Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) initiatives.

Delivered by PhD students from Lancaster University, the Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop focused on the use of infrared spectroscopy to investigate drugs in sport, giving them the opportunity to explore how scientists identify substances and detect banned compounds.

Through hands-on activities and expert guidance, pupils gained a valuable insight into modern analytical chemistry and its important real-world applications.

The scientists also took part in the RSC’s Analyst Competition, an event designed to let pupils demonstrate and develop their chemistry knowledge, practical skills, and aptitude for analytical science.

Working in teams of three, they carried out a series of experiments to determine the composition of everyday food items.

It was a challenging and enjoyable day, and the pupils came away with valuable new skills and experience.
