Magnificent Molly exceeds expectations at international championship

Lower Sixth athlete Molly Mills enjoyed a hugely successful time at the Fuerteventura International Combined Events Championships.

Molly travelled to the Canary Islands as part of an England U18 and U20 squad. Not only did she win the U18W Heptathlon competition, but she also achieved a new personal best, earned her first ever prize money, and secured the European U18 qualifying standard – an extraordinary set of accomplishments!

The success follows on from her impressive display at the school’s Senior Sports Day where she won all three of her events and was named the Victrix Ludorum.

SGS support

Stockport Grammar School has played a crucial role in supporting Molly as she balances the demands of being both a dedicated pupil and an international athlete.

The school recognises the commitment required to compete at such a high level and has created an environment that enables her to succeed in both her academic and sporting pursuits.

The school proactively supports Molly through timetable flexibility, particularly in the Sixth Form where she balances three A Levels with her sporting commitments; adjustments and proactive academic support ensure she can attend training and competitions without falling behind. This allows her to remain fully engaged with her academic work despite her busy athletic schedule, following in the footsteps of footballers, golfers and tennis players who have successfully combined A Level study with elite level sport at SGS.

Molly is supported when competing in national and international events during term time. This trust and encouragement demonstrate the school’s commitment to her development as an athlete, recognising the importance of these opportunities in her sporting career. Rather than seeing her absences as a barrier, the school views them as an extension of her education and personal growth.

In addition, Molly benefits from access to the school’s gym facilities, which she can use to maintain her fitness and training regime. This accessibility ensures she can continue her athletic development alongside her studies without compromise.

Finally, the school’s high-quality and supportive sports department plays a key role. Staff provide encouragement, expertise, and guidance, creating a positive environment where Molly feels valued and motivated. Their understanding of elite sport helps her manage pressures effectively.

Overall, Stockport Grammar School’s flexibility, resources, and supportive ethos enable Molly to thrive both academically and athletically.
