Fifth Years get a taste of Sixth Form life
To kick off the Spring Term, Fifth Year pupils spent a day experiencing life as an SGS Sixth Former.
The morning began with breakfast in the Sixth Form Centre, where pupils met Pastoral Heads, senior staff, and Upper Sixth Tutors before hearing from Mr David Stone, Head of Sixth Form.
Throughout the day, pupils joined four A Level-style lessons in subjects they had chosen, enjoyed a study period, and explored lunchtime sessions such as Plus-One activities, the Big Question Discussion Group, and Medical Society.
The aim was simple: to help pupils feel confident about their next steps and see what makes our Sixth Form such a supportive environment.
Judging by the positive feedback, it was a valuable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Art and Design
One of the lessons Fifth Years could take was A Level Art and Design.
During this opportunity to experience a typical Sixth Form lesson, pupils were given the task of creating a piece of three-dimensional work. They used withies and wire (Art) or paper, pins and masking tape (Textiles) to explore line, form, shape and structure using a process of ‘direct’ making, rather than following a pre-drawn design.

Inspired by the fast-paced working environment and the creative ideas stemming from initial discussion, the pupils made sculptures and headwear they then used them to create shadow drawings (Art) or dresses that incorporated pleats, folds, flounces and darts (Textiles).
The superb outcomes achieved in less than an hour matched with the obvious enthusiasm for the subject shown by the pupils and made for a fantastic experience for both pupils and teachers alike.
