GCSE Results 2024: Congratulations to our Fifth Years


Well done to our Fifth Years on their fantastic GCSE results!

Head of Senior School Mrs Sarah Capewell said: “I am extremely proud of our pupils for achieving such outstanding GCSE results. The difficulty of studying a wide range of subjects, some of which might not be your favourite or best, should not be underestimated: it takes real determination and good time management. However, those skills are great preparation for the future. I look forward to seeing them progress into the Sixth Form and I’m excited to see what achievements lie ahead.”

Over 22% of grades are at 9, and 63% are at 9, 8 and 7.

Earlier this year, Cara Bell delighted audiences when she played Dandini in the school’s production of Cinderella, and today she showed how wide-ranging her talents are, collecting ten 9s and one 8 in her GCSEs. She was particularly happy with her Further Maths result as it was a tough paper. Cara also takes part in Model United Nations and, out of school, plays right back for Kingsway Athletic FC. Over the next 2 years, Cara will focus her studies on English, Geography, History and Spanish.

Ten GCSEs, with nine 9s and an 8 have prepared Selwyn Cheung perfectly for his future plans – A Levels at SGS in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics, followed by a possible career in Medicine. Selwyn is also a pianist and has played with the school’s second orchestra and performed as part of Chorus.

Dancer and musician Rosie Moore was ‘very happy’ with her nine 9s and one seven in her GCSEs. Rosie, who is a member of Chamber Choir, Chorus, Concert Band, Wind Orchestra and a keen dancer is looking forward to staying at SGS to study Art, English, Maths and Textiles at A Level. She said: “I feel relieved with my grades. Now I have my grades I feel like I can relax for the rest of summer.”

The amazing ten 9s and one 8 Rosa Hughes received will see her study Art, Further Maths, Maths and Physics at A Level. She was “so happy” with her 9 in Spanish and can’t wait to tackle Art and Physics in more detail.

Iwan B said he felt ‘relieved’ after receiving nine 9s and two 8s. While at SGS, Iwan has been a part of the Climbing, Fencing and Physics clubs as well as taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. At A Level, Iwan will study Computer Science, Maths, Further Maths and Physics.

Talented linguist Annabel Huxley not only achieved 9s in French, German and Spanish but also 9s in six other subjects and an 8 in Further Maths, giving her 10 GCSEs in total. Annabel does not have a family background in languages and started her journey at the age of 4 with French classes in Stockport Grammar Junior School. This summer she returned to SGJS to assist Madame Carr for her work experience. She said “all the Modern Foreign Language department have given me so much help, and I’m also very grateful to Mrs Lawson for her help with English”. A Levels at SGS in French, German, Spanish and Chemistry are next for Annabel who would like to have a career as a linguist. Annabel is also a member of school council and of the choirs.

With eleven GCSEs, including seven 9s and three 8s, Joshua Hodgson is looking in to degree options in Politics and International Relations with an interest in a career as a diplomat. Geography, History, Maths and Further Maths A Levels at SGS are the next step for Joshua who is also a member of the school’s Model United Nations team. Alongside this, he has just completed his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and enjoys playing hockey for Timperley.

Lilly Cook was “happy and surprised” with her seven 9s and three 7s, saying “my teachers are all fab“. A Levels at SGS in Economics, Philosophy, Physics and Maths follow with Engineering as a possible career option. It isn’t all academic work though for double bassist Lilly who performs in the school orchestras and plays hockey for SGS.

Ten GCSES, with six 9s and four 8s, see Reuben Barraclough well prepared for his career ambitions in Medicine or Finance. SGS Sixth Form and A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths will follow in September.

Stockport Falcons basketball player Oliver Walker is very happy with his 10 GCSE’s – especially his 9 in English. He is looking forward to having more freedom in Sixth Form where he will be studying Business, Economics, Maths and Psychology. He thanked English Teacher Miss Nichols for her advice and support leading up to the exams.

A Levels in Classics, English, History and Politics await Amy Yates. Amy does ballet at Cheshire Dance Academy outside of school and she is looking forward to focusing on her subjects more than she could in Lower and Middle School.

Hannah Johnson has enjoyed LAMDA, archery and performing in the choirs. She also played one of the main characters, Buttons, in this year’s production of Cinderella. She achieved nine GCSEs and was pleased with the grades she picked up in Maths and Maths Statistics.

Hockey forward Keziah Forde-Smith was particularly happy with her 9 in Maths as it is one of the subjects she is studying in Sixth Form. She will also study Drama, Economics and Further Maths and one of her highlights of her time at SGS so far is playing three different parts in the production of The Play That Goes Wrong.

Musician Toby Wells had an air of calm as he opened his results – eleven GCSEs that included six 9s and four 8s. Toby is part of Big Band, Brass Ensemble, Chorus and Wind Orchestra and when he is not playing in concerts, he enjoys playing scrum-half on the rugby pitch. In Sixth Form he will study Maths, Further Maths, PE and Physics.

Seven 9s, an 8 and a 7 had Bethan Holding feeling very relieved. She said: “I was so full of nerves this morning I couldn’t keep my hands still. I’m so glad all the hard work paid off.” She has thrown plenty of energy in to activities outside the classroom too – football, Model United Nations, mountain biking and the Duke of Edinburgh award. A Levels in Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths are next.

Musician Sophia Horne is very happy that her hard work paid off and is particularly looking forward to studying Politics in Sixth Form alongside Classics, English Literature and History. Sophia went on the recent Music tour to Paris and is part of Big Band, Brass Ensemble, First Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Chorus and Chamber Choir.

Climber Grace Setchfield was thrilled with her 9 in English and is excited to take Chemistry, Classics, Maths and Psychology at A Level. She is looking forward to the opportunities available to her in Sixth Form.

Rebecca Peet will be focussing on Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics over the next two years. The common room and different uniform are just two of the things the violinist and Bramhall School Of Dancing performer is looking forward to.

Musician Will Harvey, who was recently on work experience with local band Blossoms when they filmed at SGS, was happy with the ten GCSEs he secured. He was especially pleased with his 9 in English as it was a hard exam. The exceptional drummer is part of numerous music groups at school, these include Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Big Band, Wind Orchestra, First Orchestra, Chorus and Jazz Band, and he will be studying Business, Music, Politics and Psychology in Sixth Form.

Noor Farooq was really happy to see 9s in her favourite subjects, History and Religious Studies, amongst her two 9s, an 8, five 7s and a 6. She wanted to thank her teachers saying: “ they taught me in a really good way”, and particularly the Religious Studies department where there were opportunities to get involved with helping food banks and charities. She is looking forward to starting her A Levels in Psychology, Religious Studies, Biology and Chemistry in the SGS Sixth Form.

Five of Emma Broomhead’s nine GCSEs were 9s and she is excited to take on Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Psychology at A Level – with a potential career in engineering the end goal. Emma is part of the choir and went on the recent tour to Paris and she is also taking part in the school’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme.

Celebrations are in store for sportsman Matthew Peak. With two 9s, four 8s, one 7, one 6 and one 4, Matthew is looking forward to studying Biology, Economics, Maths and Physics at A Level at SGS. While at school, Matthew has been part of the football and rugby teams, as well as taking part in DofE expeditions.

Ella Clayton picked up seven 9s, two 8s and one 7 and will study Chemistry, Geography, Maths and Physics at Sixth Form. The climber and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme member was especially happy with her 9s in Design Technology and Geography.

Sportsman Cameron Reid was happy with his good results “across the board” as he scored ten GCSEs – including five 9s and four 8s. The Marple Cricket Club batter and right-winger for Cheadle Town FC will study Biology, Chemistry, Economics and Maths at SGS Sixth Form.

Alfie Aughton hailed Head of History and Politics Mr Tom Leng as “the best teacher in the world”, so it is maybe no surprise that he plans to study Politics and Criminology.

Amelie Joubert was pleased with her results in her ten GCSEs, saying “I didn’t think I’d get an 8 in Biology”. She particularly enjoyed studying Latin, and alongside her studies has played tennis at SGS. Next up, A Levels at SGS in Maths, Chemistry and Biology.

Tiffany Uraih was very pleased to see her 9 in Maths, plus three 8s, three 7s and two 6s. A member of school council, Tiffany also plays netball for school and this summer chose to do NCS (National Citizen Service). She said “I’m really grateful to the teachers”. A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics will follow at SGS, with Medicine and Dentistry possible future careers.

Twins Ben and Tim Williams will both study Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Design Technology at A Level and are ‘very happy’ with their grades. Ben received one 8, six 7s, one 6 and one 5 and Tim received five 9s, three 8s, and one 6.

Six 9s and four 8s awaited Rose McDonald as she opened her results. She was really pleased with what she saw and is excited to tackle Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics in Sixth Form.

Emilia Paul plans to study Art, Photography and Psychology. She has enjoyed taking part in musical events and went on the department’s tour to London in Third Year.
