Careers Afternoon offers Third Years valuable insights

Pupils listening to an apprenticeships talk during the Third Year Careers Afternoon

Third Year pupils found out more about careers they might be interested in, and learned about some they hadn’t considered before, at a Careers Afternoon.

The sessions, which took place in the Woodsmoor building, saw representatives from a range of industries and businesses give presentations and talks about their daily work.

A number of Old Stopfordians returned to school for the event. Libby Porter (OS 2023) and Enoch Ajayi (OS 2025), alongside Inaaya Khan, spoke about apprenticeships; Kim Cothari (OS 2014) talked about being a Sky Sports Journalist; and Natalie Clarke (OS 2013) and Claire Richards discussed being Environmental Consultants.

Jenny Carlsson (OS 2014) talked about her career as an Ecologist; Dr Laura Pickering (OS 1999) spoke about being a Psychologist; and Amy Morgan (OS 2014) delivered an interesting talk on her career in the emergency services.

Jen Gladman gave an insight into her job as a Head Stylist at JD Sports; Jonathan King and Jodie Sumner discussed careers in law; Jenny Cox covered architecture; and Nathan Boydell spoke about a career in medicine.

Mathematics Teacher Miss Rosie Read chatted about her previous career as an Actuary; Assistant Head (Character and Culture) Mr Adam Power gave an insight into his former job as a Government Policy Advisor; and Dr Jude Power talked about being a Senior Medical Advisor.

Reflecting on the event, one pupil said: “It was really interesting as some of the speakers were only a few years older than us”, a second commented: “I got to see a really good range of careers”, whilst another noted: “It has made me consider ecology as a job.”

The Third Years will continue to do further research into careers in their Life Studies lessons before making their GCSE choices next term.
