Island adventure thrills geographers
During Autumn half term Fifth Year and Sixth Form Geography pupils attended a five-day trip to Sicily and the Aoelian Islands.

The travelling group were enthralled by the range of active physical landscapes they experienced.

These exemplified a lot of the coastal and tectonic studies that they are engaging with in their GSCE and A Level studies.

During the trip pupils bravely embarked on a hike up Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest – and one of its most active – volcanoes, in minus two degrees stormy weather.

The group again tested themselves as they went gorge walking along the volcanic gorge at Alcantara.

A cruise around the Aoelian Islands of Lipari and Vulcano allowed the geographers to explore the black sand beaches and sulphur fields.

In their downtime the pupils discovered the cultural side of Sicilian life in the town of Taormina.
