Juniors focus on importance of fire safety

During October and November Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) visit schools to talk about fire safety.

Reception children were very excited as the firefighters gave them a tour of their fire engine.

The visitors showed the girls and boys all of the important tools that they keep in the truck.

They also showed them the ladders, let them walk through the fire engine and sounded the siren – whilst the children covered their ears!

They ended the tour by having a go at squirting the hose!

In the hall, the Fire Service delivered a presentation to Year 5 pupils where they encouraged them to attend organised bonfire and firework displays. If staying at home, the children were told to make sure that there was always adult supervision.

Although it is an exciting time of year, the firefighters then focused on the dangers of playing with fire and how quickly it can spread, as well as informing them of the serious risks of making hoax calls.

The session ended with a demonstration of the protective suit firefighters wear, and one pupil was lucky enough to try the suit on for themselves!
