Pupils excel in phenomenal production of Sister Act

The cast and musicians of Sister Act

The Main Hall was awash with music and laughter as four performances of ‘Sister Act’ took to the stage.

The musical, based on the 1992 film of the same name, follows club singer Deloris Van Cartier as she hides in a convent after witnessing a violent crime.

What follows is plenty of shenanigans, songs, and, of course, a nun or two!

The musical is the first performed at SGS since the production of ‘Chicago’ in 2019 and our pupils and staff put in a lot of hard work to make the show a success.

Not only did our pupils take to the stage, but they also played vital roles in the band, in lighting and sound, and backstage to help to keep the show running smoothly. In total more than 60 of our pupils took part in the production.

The standards of performance were fantastic from all pupils involved – with some audience members commenting that the show felt like a professional production!

Upper Sixth Form student Anjali Abraham played the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier who works hard to turn the subpar choir at the convent around. Rosie Moore played Mother Superior who butts head with Deloris about her role within the convent, and May Nassar and Mia Krywonos played nuns Sister Mary Patrick and Sister Mary Lazarus.

Fourth Year Charlotte Sullivan was novice nun Sister Mary Robert who stands up for what she believes in to help Deloris escape from her gangster ex-boyfriend.

Speaking of which, Fifth Year George Mason took to the stage as conniving gangster Curtis who is hell-bent on finding Deloris after she witnesses his crime. Along with his motley crew, he has one goal: make Deloris pay.

Fifth Year Toby Gleave played Eddie, a police chief who helps hide Deloris in the convent – and who may harbour feelings for a certain fake nun.

Our pupils performed four shows to sold-out audiences.

Director of Music, Mr Michael Dow said: “The production of ‘Sister Act’ was a phenomenal success and I am immensely proud of what all the pupils have achieved.

“The standard of the singing, playing, acting and dancing was incredibly high, reflecting several months of dedication and very hard work in rehearsal.

“One long-standing colleague commented to me that they thought this was the best production they had ever seen at SGS in 29 years.

“There is no doubt that something very special was achieved that will live forever, I imagine, in the memories of those involved.

“I would like to thank and congratulate all the pupils, including all those in a variety of backstage roles, on a truly outstanding achievement.”

We were thrilled to receive so many great comments and feedback about the shows. Please find a selection of these below.

It was an absolute joy to watch and, having seen many different school productions in different schools over the years, it was most definitely the best I have ever seen. It was easily as good as any professional production, and I am sure you are all immensely proud of this wonderful achievement. The passion and energy and sheer joy on the stage at every performance was just incredible and infectious

One of the best experiences! I made so many new friends amongst the year groups and it was so lovely to perform in front of so many supportive audiences

Parent Daniel Lightening:

Phenomenal show across the board. The quality of the singing, musicianship, choreography and staging was exceptional. All the lead vocal performances were genuinely amazing and backed up beautifully by the chorus sections. And so heartwarming to see the camaraderie and exuberant celebrations among all the pupils on the stage at the end of the show. They have obviously had the time of their lives

It was such an amazing experience that I’ll never forget! I’ve made so many memories and formed such close bonds with the cast and made so many new friends with people I’d never even spoken to before. The support from people backstage such as the teachers and students, and the choreography by Mrs Downing and music help by Mr Dow were amazing and I’m so proud of all of us

Pupil Anya Wells:

I loved being part of the show as not only was it extremely funny to perform, but the cast of the show were always exciting and fun to be around with many laughs shared. The cast and the staff worked very hard for the show to be put on, so I was really glad that the audience on every night seemed to enjoy watching the show just as much as we did performing it
