Stepping into the Anglo-Saxon world at Tatton Park

Year 5 pupils immersed themselves in Anglo-Saxon and Viking life during a visit to the Old Hall at Tatton Park.

The day began with the children meeting the Anglo-Saxon villagers who spoke to them about their settlement and a visiting Viking who might be coming to collect his ‘danegeld’ – a tax the Anglo-Saxons paid the Vikings.

To prove their worth to the villagers and be prepared in case the Vikings did come, the children had to learn various skills, from threshing and winnowing the wheat to training to become a warrior!

Maddy L, Sofia A and Alyssa H said: “It was a great adventure! We met some Anglo-Saxons and it was fun learning all of their ways! One thing that most of us enjoyed was the weaving – it was addictive and very entertaining. We also enjoyed threshing the wheat so we could make flour! The whole day was fun, and we all wish one day to visit again.”

Martha K and Lizzie C commented: “Our favourite activity was making the flour like the Anglo-Saxons would have done. It was amazing to have an insight into what life would have been like back then.”

Carmen S added: “My two favourite parts of the day were making braids out of wool and learning how to create a formation with shields, as this is what the Anglo-Saxons would have done in battles.”
