Talented Textiles pupils shine with stunning creations
GCSE Textiles pupils demonstrated their burgeoning creativity as they produced superb pieces for their coursework.
Georgina Vincent Bell made a protective snowboarding jumper with an oversized hood to allow for a helmet to be worn under it. It also had interior pockets where removable padding could be used as extra protection on the shoulders and elbows. It was made functional by the addition of a zipper pocket at the front for storage. She used a technical fabric which was both insulating and water repellent. To make her product stand out she created several heat map style appliqués too.
Erin Roberts looked at different cultures as her main inspiration for her final jumper design. She incorporated traditional textiles techniques and symbols from the African culture. She used natural indigo dye to dye the main body of her fabric and created a screen print to use as a lining which mirrored the design that she appliquéd onto the back of her jumper.

Emily Flint looked at designing an item of clothing to promote safety for female runners and sports enthusiasts. She focused on using reflective trims on the sleeves, zips, and toggles. She used a technical fabric that was insulating yet breathable, as well as water repellent. To make her design look even more professional she created a brand logo to empower women by incorporating feminine symbols of strength and power. She then used reflective vinyl to apply the logo on to her running jacket.
Dilys Gibbons focused on the design brief ‘net zero’ and investigated using organic and natural materials that would biodegrade in the most sustainable way. She wanted to create a sustainable option for an item of clothing that would probably only be worn once e.g. a prom dress. She used a natural cotton poplin material and then dyed it using natural dyes. She aimed to use the minimal number of components and to make the fit of the dress slightly adaptable to aid longevity.

Annalise Round was inspired by East Asian cultures and referenced traditional costume silhouettes including a wrap and tie waist detail on her dress design. She used flared box pleats on her skirt to create an A-line silhouette and added beautiful embroidery details based on her gorgeous hand drawn studies of cherry blossom around the neckline to complete the look.
Textiles Teacher Mrs Katy Gate said: “I am absolutely thrilled with the fantastic Textiles results this year. The students have all worked so hard on their coursework and it really has paid off.
“Each final piece was thoroughly developed and professionally finished. They were all ambitious and complex ideas incorporating technical features, and I love that they all produced completely different ideas. I am very proud of them all and what they have achieved.”
