Year 5 embrace Anglo-Saxon experience

Year 5 pupils had a fantastic day at the medieval Old Hall at Tatton Park for an Anglo-Saxon and Viking experience.

The trip began with the children meeting the Anglo-Saxon villagers who told them about a visiting Viking warlord that was due to come to collect his ‘danegeld’ – a tax the Anglo-Saxons paid the Vikings.

To prove their worth to the villagers and the Viking warlord, the boys and girls had to learn various skills, from threshing and winnowing the wheat, to training to become a warrior.

Pupil Sam P said: “We all really enjoyed it. We did some really cool activities such as learning how to track deer and braiding. My favourite thing was learning about armour and weapons of the time, and training to be an Anglo-Saxon warrior.

“We got to hold swords, spears and axes. We also built a shield wall, which is a cool way of holding your shields with your fellow soldiers to hold up against enemy attacks.”

Reeva N commented: “My favourite activities were learning about weaving and looking at the armour. We got to make bracelets out of string and cardboard.

“I liked the armour and weapons because I got to try on the helmets chain mail – which was heavy – and the axe and sword.”

Charlotte S added: “In my opinion, it was a really fun trip. I recommend going as you will learn how to plait, make flour and make a shield wall. You also find out how to hold weapons and trap deer.”
