Growth and development on show during Aberdovey trip

Seventy-two Second Year pupils travelled to Outward Bound Aberdovey to take on a week-long course designed to stretch and challenge them physically, mentally and socially.

The trip saw them spend five days in teams and dorms away from their usual social groups – as well as a five-day detox with no phone or social media.

All of the pupils embraced the experience from day one. The instructors set up the course and picked the expedition and activities to best suit their group, allowing them to get the most out of the week.

On the Tuesday night the Second Years went out on expedition. Some camped low, others high, and some with no tent at all.

As the week went on the groups bonded and developed really well, with each individual learning what it means to be part of a team, and the skills needed to achieve a variety of tasks and challenges.

The trip gave pupils a better understanding of themselves, their strengths and weaknesses. New friendships were formed, and they increased their confidence as they approach their options year.

Outdoor Education Co-ordinator Mr Adam Hughes said: “It was great to see them start to take responsibility for themselves and their actions, understand their roles and develop empathy throughout the week.

“It was not all plain sailing, with tiredness and emotions adding to the challenge, but that plays an important part of the learning outcomes for the week.

“As pupils move into the Third Year, I hope they can take with them some of the experiences and learning from this week.

“All the SGS staff on the trip were proud of the pupils and saw much growth and development in that week. I know the pupils may not see it for themselves, but somewhere down the line it will sneak up on them.”
