Spanish adventure in Águilas: A memorable immersion trip
38 pupils from Second to Fourth Year embarked on an exciting Spanish immersion trip to the beautiful coastal town of Águilas.
The group flew to Alicante before transferring to their destination, ready for four days packed with language, culture and adventure.
Upon arrival in Águilas, the trip began in earnest as pupils met their friendly Spanish ‘monitores’.
The afternoon was spent on the local beach where everyone quickly got to know one another through fun ball games and a refreshing dip in the sea.
After dinner the group enjoyed a lively evening of ice-breaker games. From threading pasta using only their mouths to attempting biscuit challenges without hands, there was plenty of laughter to set the tone for the days ahead.
The first full day began with a Spanish lesson that focused on key vocabulary needed for the upcoming water sports activities. Pupils then put their new language skills into action as they tried kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and even Big SUP under the guidance of their Spanish instructors.
The afternoon brought out everyone’s competitive side in a Spanish bake-off. Working in teams, pupils were challenged to create traditional local biscuits. Using only Spanish, they had to request ingredients and follow instructions.
Creativity and teamwork were put to the test, with teachers judging entries based on appearance and taste. The day concluded with a fun pool party, followed by dinner and an evening spent playing football and volleyball as the sun set over the coast.
The next morning the group took a visit to the local castle, taking in spectacular views of Águilas and the Mediterranean Sea. This was followed by some free time in town, where pupils enjoyed practising their Spanish while shopping.
After lunch the pupils took part in an interactive murder mystery activity, where all clues, questions and answers were given in Spanish. This immersive experience really challenged their listening and speaking skills.
The afternoon continued with a lively dance session, where pupils learned salsa, bachata and flamenco moves. The day ended on a high with a farewell disco, where everyone danced the night away and celebrated their experiences together.
On the final morning, pupils worked in teams to complete a creative photo challenge. Tasks included posing as if on a roller coaster, taking pictures under trees, and even snapping photos with waiters. The results were imaginative and provided a wonderful keepsake from the trip.
Before departure there was just enough time for a final game of bingo with the ‘monitores’ and a few relaxing hours on the beach, with pupils either playing sports or soaking up the sunshine.
Throughout the trip, pupils fully embraced every opportunity to participate, communicate, and immerse themselves in Spanish culture. It was fantastic to see them confidently using their language skills with both their ‘monitores’ and local residents.
This unforgettable experience not only strengthened pupils’ Spanish abilities but also created lasting memories and friendships.
