Year 5 portrait artists colour SGS beautiful
Now in its 12th year, Stockport Grammar School’s annual Year 5 art competition inspired 107 artists from 15 local schools to create spectacular portraits.
The artwork brightened up a cold February evening for parents and teachers at the celebration exhibition.

Each year SGS judges Mr Richard Davies, Head of Art, and Mrs Becci Upton, Art Teacher, are astounded by the entrants’ imaginative interpretation of the theme of ‘self-portrait’.

Pieces are created in a range of medias, from photography and out of this world pastels to multi-layered collage. The high quality and care put into the pieces makes it very difficult to choose winners – all artists were congratulated on being chosen to represent their schools.

As with all competitions, there had to be an overall winner and this year it was Caroline L from St Ambrose Preparatory School. She captured the attention of the judges with a multi-layered portrait that explored textures to create a masterpiece that felt like it was emerging from the canvas.

Runners-up prizes were awarded to Jarvis O from St Thomas’ CE Primary School and Aizah A from Lum Head Primary School. The judges also introduced two highly commended awards this year as a result of the high standard of entries. These commendations went to Ayden J from Adswood Primary School and Eva B from Mottram CE Primary School.

Mr Davies commented: “It was a delight to judge the competition – the inspiring pieces created by the children showed considerable care taken. It is always fascinating to see the range of interpretations of the brief, I hope the artists enjoyed viewing each others work and have taken away some new ideas to continue creating.”

During the evening, the children also enjoyed taking part in art activities led by SGS art students and sampled the delicious home-made bakes from the school’s kitchen. All of the artists went home with a small gift to help them continue to capture their creativity for others to enjoy.
